D-Art's Contemporary admits doing
a lousy job of telling their story

I didn't get the E-mail from them, but a few days after a friend forwarded the following message, a human female read it (almost completely indecipherably) on my telephone answering machine:

"Hello The Contemporary Members!!

I am so excited to be letting you know about our new
Art Matters Sessions. We are realizing that we need to do a better job of telling our story to the community. We have started to offer short info-packed one hour sessions for people to see our programs firsthand and give us feedback on how we can get the word out to more people.

Come and see our new exhibitions amd meet our fabulous director, Joan, if you have not already. Please note this is not a fundraiser, so we will not be asking for any money. We are letting our friends know about what wonderful exhibitions and programs are happening and hoping to meet new appreciators of Contemporary art. Please join us on one of the following days:

[Times + dates have been changed.]

The 8:30 sessions will include a light breakfast and the 5:00 sessions will be happy hour style. Also, please feel free to invite anyone you think may be interested in hearing more about us.
Please RSVP to this email address or at 214.821.2522 before May 26. We look forward to seeing you soon!

I welcome any questions or comments!!!

Fondly,
Kristina Pettus

This Kristina Pettus did not identify herself in either E-mail or on the phone, and if I hadn't seen the forwarded E-mail I might have dismissed the call as yet another overmodulated, unsolicited phone sales call. Presumably she is D-Art's latest publicity person, too new to the job to even know she ought to identify herself.

Still, it is vaguely hopeful that the latest permutation of D-Art is, at least and at last, realizing that they "need to do a better job." It might have been better if they'd developed their latest version of their story within their community — the paid membership — before they changed their story 47 times. But we can't expect miracles.

My forwarding friend guessed they're experiencing diminished attendance. I don't know, because I don't go there anymore [either]. A year ago, I joined DVAC, not no "Contemporary" on Swiss Avenue. A couple of weeks ago, I declined the offer to reup there and instead joined the original Contemporary Dallas art center on McKinney Avenue.

I'm sure The MAC is delighted that I'm with them now. They've always needed a conscience, since the original DARE charter, whose nonprofit status they grabbed had more to do with exhibiting unknown Dallas artists than the BTAGSFOOT ( Big Time Art Guys/Gals From Out Of Town ) art they usually show instead, although I'm kinda proud of them lately for showing outstanding local sculptors Tom Orr and Cameron Schoepp in their current show, paid for by the Belo Media Conglomerate.
